While It Flowers…

The Howrah Phool Bazaar (Flower Market) is a vivid exhibition of colors and fragrances as vendors bring in varieties of fresh flowers in bulks for sale. It is said that the ‘flower sales’ across the city of Kolkata is sourced from this stretch of century old market area at Mallik Ghat. The street starts bustling with activities as the break of dawn. While the market has a number of proper shops, it also includes vendors who do not have permanent outlets here and they simply occupy places along the roadside. Also, there are the flower porters whose sole task is to carry the flowers – for instance, from large outlets to the smaller ones, from the market to customer’s preferred point of delivery. In one of the photographs here, we see a porter as if wearing a dress of orange marigolds, the thin frame of his body hardly visible from under the bright blossoms.
